Philosophy of Design

As architects and designers, our most important asset is the ability to listen. Listening occurs at many levels, from what a client speaks to what a context will whisper. It is our role to interpret these many voices to create projects of lasting and timeless design.

Our work occurs at a range of scales, and we take great pleasure in shifting focus from the design of a ground-up building to detailing a light fixture or bench. We believe in design that is integrated at all levels, from the urban to the most tactile detail, where nothing is an afterthought. It is often what can be touched in a project, or what surrounds you, which is the most intimate, revealing of the thoughtfulness that came before it.

Working on different types of projects also yields for us productive insights. Our expertise in luxury residential detailing frequently informs our large scale commercial works. Similarly, the ability to think at a large scale and collaborate on complex enterprises yields strong smaller projects. Solutions and relationships from either arena are brought to bear in fruitful and often surprising ways.

Materiality remains foremost in our minds as we approach a design challenge. How finishes are set out and come to meet, how they harmonize as a whole, or contrast to make a statement: these are the building blocks of our design process and the vocabulary with which we speak. Our vast curated library of materials and details reflects our deep interest in how projects are made manifest.

At any scale, design does not exist for us in a vacuum. Through rigorous research and site analysis, we seek to pull aesthetic cues from a project’s urban and historical context. We feel it is important for our projects to speak to their neighbors. This dialogue is what helps projects remain relevant for years to come.

Our focus on context is also what helps us define a project’s identity, both visual and conceptual. It aids us in developing an iconographic and architectural language for each project, something that can be developed in different areas and scales. It often becomes the public face of the project, and helps in translating our thoughts and ideas to a larger audience.

A strong design sensibility and engaged conceptual practice are nothing, however, without the necessary tools and skills to bring ideas to life. With over 20 years of practice, Jean-Gabriel Neukomm and his seasoned team bring a level of rigor and seriousness to every project to ensure the result meets the high standards set out at the start. Collaboration at all stages is second nature for us, and we enjoy speaking the many languages required to lead and manage successful projects.

At JG Neukomm Architecture, our focus is to balance these many goals. Relevance comes from being modern, but also hearing the past and seeing our surroundings. We enjoy and learn from collaborating, but do not hesitate to lead when required. We seek harmony of design, but know also when to be bold. It is with these tools that we bring hopes and aspirations to reality.
